Can you still sell patterns, recipes and guides on Etsy? The 2026 AI rule explained for printable sellers

Published 27 October 2026 · Last checked 29 October 2026 · 7 minute read

The short answer

Yes, if you made them yourself. Since Etsy's 22 October 2026 update, AI-generated "functional guides" such as patterns, recipes and instructions are no longer allowed. For these listings, the information buyers rely on to create or use your item must be your own work, and the listing must show an actual result made using your instructions, not an AI-generated or simulated one.

This is a plain-English summary for printable and digital download sellers, not legal advice. Etsy's own policy pages are the authority, and Printable Pilot isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Etsy.

What changed on 22 October 2026

Etsy published Important updates to AI use on Etsy in its Seller Handbook on 22 October 2026, written by James Ossman, Etsy's Vice President of Customer Operations. Etsy says many active buyers can't tell which items involve AI-generated content, and that this has "become a top-three barrier to shopping more often on Etsy". Its summary line: "AI should support your creativity and craftsmanship, not replace them."

The functional guides rule in Etsy's words

"If you sell functional guides like patterns, recipes, or instructions, the information buyers rely on to create or use your item must be your own work, not generated by AI. This means AI-generated functional guides are no longer allowed on Etsy. For these listings, you'll also need to show an actual result made using your instructions, not an AI-generated or simulated result, so buyers know what to expect."

The other AI rules in brief

The same update says listings must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background (Etsy notes that some exceptions may apply depending on the items you sell), that all photos must accurately represent what the buyer receives, and that bot-generated listings without any human involvement aren't allowed. Etsy says those bot listings "will be removed and may also result in your shop being removed from Etsy." It also says that if a listing doesn't meet the image requirements and a buyer opens a case because the item is materially different, you may be responsible for refunding the buyer.

What counts as a "functional guide"?

Clearly in scope

Etsy's examples are patterns, recipes and instructions: things a buyer relies on to make or use something. That covers crochet, knitting and sewing patterns, recipe printables and ebooks, and how-to or instructional guides.

Planners, templates, worksheets and other printables

Etsy's announcement doesn't say whether planners, templates or worksheets count as functional guides, so we won't guess. Its listing image rules do say what photos digital downloads need: "If your item has a visual component, such as a printable or template, include a preview of the actual content buyers will receive. For digital items without a visual component, you may use representative imagery, including AI-generated images, as long as it doesn't mislead buyers about what they're purchasing." (Etsy Help, checked 29 October 2026)

So for a printable or template, the preview of the real pages is what counts, not a photo of a printout. We cover this in Etsy's photo rules for printables. If you're unsure whether your product counts as a functional guide, ask Etsy Support about your listing.

Can I still sell guides I wrote myself?

Yes. The rule is about who created the information buyers rely on. If the pattern, recipe or instructions are your own work, you can keep selling them, as long as the listing shows an actual result made using your instructions.

How to show a "real result" in your listing

Photograph the finished thing

Make the item from your own instructions and photograph it: the finished crochet piece, the cooked dish, the completed project. Etsy's best practice is to make your first photo "the clearest, most realistic representation of the item buyers will receive."

Unedited photo and allowed edits

Etsy generally requires at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. Outside that photo, you can still use editing tools, including AI, to "adjust lighting or colour, crop or resize images, or change backgrounds", as long as the item doesn't look different. For craft patterns, recipes and similar items, Etsy's listing image rules say: "Include at least one real, unedited photo of something made using your product. AI-generated images cannot be the only images used to show the finished result." Printables and templates instead need a preview of the actual content buyers will receive. If you use AI to edit photos, Etsy suggests saying so in the listing description.

Where AI is still allowed

Etsy says it will continue to allow AI-generated art "when sellers play a clear creative role in what they create and are transparent about their process." Sellers must disclose when an item is created using AI and can't present AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own creation.

A note on our own product: Printable Pilot sells AI prompts. They're meant to help you make your own original work, with your AI use disclosed on Etsy. They're not for generating patterns, recipes or instructions to sell, because Etsy no longer allows AI-generated functional guides.

Checklist: audit your guide and pattern listings

  • Did you write the instructions, pattern or recipe yourself, not AI?
  • Is there a photo of an actual result made using your instructions?
  • Does the listing meet the unedited photo requirement for your item type?
  • Do all photos accurately show what the buyer gets?
  • Is any AI use disclosed, including AI photo edits?
  • Are the title and description accurate?

If a listing gets flagged or removed

Etsy says that if it detects AI-generated images when you create a listing, it will give you tips to meet its photo expectations, and that it plans to expand this guidance to existing images and enforce more proactively over time. It is also adding a "Report this item to Etsy" reason for misleading AI imagery; to start, Etsy says these reports "won't result in immediate enforcement action." If a listing is removed, you can appeal through the Policy violations page in Shop Manager.

Etsy's announcement doesn't set out a specific penalty for AI-generated functional guides beyond saying they're no longer allowed. We can't predict how or when any listing will be reviewed.

FAQ

Are AI-generated crochet or sewing patterns allowed on Etsy?

No. Etsy's 22 October 2026 update says AI-generated functional guides are no longer allowed, and it gives patterns as an example. The information buyers rely on to create or use the item must be your own work.

Can I sell recipe printables on Etsy?

Yes, if the recipes are your own work and not generated by AI. Etsy also says the listing must show an actual result made using your instructions, such as a real dish, not an AI-generated or simulated result.

Can I use AI to design the layout of my guide?

Etsy's update targets the information buyers rely on, which must be your own work, and it asks sellers to be transparent about AI use. It doesn't give a ruling on layout or design help, so check Etsy's Listing Image Requirements policy and ask Etsy Support about your own case.

What photo does my pattern listing need?

Etsy says functional guide listings must show an actual result made using your instructions. Etsy's listing image rules say patterns, recipes and similar items need at least one real, unedited photo of something made using your product, and AI-generated images cannot be the only images used to show the finished result.

Is AI art still allowed on Etsy?

Yes. Etsy says it will continue to allow AI-generated art when sellers play a clear creative role and are transparent about their process. You must disclose when an item is created using AI and can't present it as handmade or entirely your own creation.

What if my listing is removed?

Etsy says you can submit an appeal through the Policy violations page in Shop Manager, as you would for other policy violations.
